Well we decided to buy a Cobb BBQ.

We bought one from Piplers in Poole as they had a really great price of £89.99.

They don't really do themselves justice as their Cobb comes with a carry bag and also a recipe book. Some other sellers list these separately!
Plus they had the items in stock in their shop in Poole. So we decided to make a day of it and go down on Saturday and pick one up to save on the postage.

Also gave me a chance to see how fuel efficient our new Golf Bluemotion was.. it's supposed to do 70+mpg, however around town I've never really managed to crack 50mpg. On this run we averaged 57'ish mpg which I guess isn't bad as it was mixed across country A roads, loads of stop and start with a bit of motorway as well. It was quite fun trying to keep the economy up... it might wear off though!

Anyway back to the Cobb. We decided to give it a try on Sunday. The good lady went out to get some provisions and got some charcoal briquettes and fire lighters. I have to say that it was a bit of a damp squib after the instant nature of a gas bbq. I knew we'd have to wait for the charcoal to turn grey, but that took about an hour! Note to self that the instruction book says to use good quality charcoal heat beads or briquettes. So anyway the grill then went on with some burgers, sausages and then the lid. The book reminded me not to look so we left it alone for 15 mins or so.. sizzling ensued and the food began to cook. However it did seem to bake rather than BBQ cook, the burgers weren't burning and neither were the sausages... so whilst they were cooked they weren't nicely coloured and the sausages didn't have crisp skins.
We decided that the poor quality charcoal was to blame because it provided some heat but not enough and not really quickly enough.
We finally finished the BBQ some 3 hours after we started!
So it wasn't a great start to Cobb cooking.
I've now ordered some of the single Cobblestone fuel bricks to use instead of Charcoal and I hope these will make a difference.
I'll report back in due course.

The round Cobb bricks MOM had looked pretty impressive.

Yes I've ordered some of the cobblestones as they are called to see what a difference they make.
They are meant to burn hotter and more quickly but obviously don't last so long. I think that's exactly what i need.

I've tried three different methods. Like Dave I found that the briquettes were'nt that impressive. However on the Sunday after you'd all left all I had to use were the charcoal peices that Chad left behind and they were better then the briquettes. Of the the three the Cobb bricks were the best. I ordered mine direct from Cobb because they appeared to be the cheapest.

I've never had a problem getting colour onto sausages. I grill them directly on the plate above the charcoal without the cover. In fact it is possible to get them coloured to the same standard as Dave did on his BBQ. I did some lamb steaks on the grill above the plate and agree they don't colour much. We also did some potatoe wedges and they came out brown, crispy and yummy. These were done directly on the plate without the grille.

The next thing for you to get is the wok/frying pan. Does a cracking casserole. This also fits on the top of the Cobb in the bag for easy transportation
