Default Somerset - Muchelney - Abbey Farm (Muchelney Caravan and Camping Site)

We've just come back from a weekend at the Abbey Farm Caravan and Camping Site in Muchelney near to Langport in Somerset.

I found it difficult to find any reviews of this site on the 'net so felt that I should remedy that.
Well you'll be pleased to know that it gets a thumbs up from myself and the family and friends who visited with us.

The site has 30 or so pitches although they do have provision for rallies.
They accept dogs although only on some pitches.
They have a mixture of hard standing and grass pitches nicely partitioned off in lots of cases with small hedges between.
Electric hook-up is also available as are pitches without.

They have great facilities, with separate gents and ladies shower and toilet blocks. In the gents there are 4 toilets and 2 showers and in the ladies there are 4 toilets and 3 showers, so adequate for the numbers.
The toilet blocks are to an equally high standard and very clean. They are also centrally heated and when we were there temperatures were down to 2 or 3 degrees and they were nice and warm.
The showers were warm, and free, not particularly powerful and they are the push button types. I would class them as good, I've seen better, but then again I've seen much worse! They were all clean and well thought out with benches to sit on and plenty of hooks for towels, etc..
The site caters for recycling which is good to see with a multitude of bins by the toilet block.
Obviously a fresh water point is available and there are also dump points to empty waste tanks.
There is a very large undercover area in the barn that is available to shelter in or to BBQ or whatever you need basically. There is also a freezer available for site use.

The site owner is very friendly and will stop and have a chat. He clearly has customer service top of his mind and this comes through in the conversations with him.

Prices stay the same all the year round which keeps it simple.
An example from the current tariff as at Dec 2009....
Car, Trailer Tent, Caravan, Camper Van - £8.50 per night
Electric Hook Up - £2.50 per night

One key point is that they will allow Tipi's and wood burning stoves as long as they don't burn the grass. So we were welcomed with open arms and were a point of interest and conversation whilst we were there.

In terms of the surrounding area, you are between the River Parrett and the River Yeo in an Environmentally Sensitive Area which pays special attention to flora, fauna, birds and aquatic life.

Fishing is allowed from the owners farm on the River Parrett for no extra charge, you need a rod license though.

When we were there, there was extensive flooding which is normal for the winter in this area, but it doesn't affect the camp site. We enjoyed a walk from the site along the old railway line in to Langport and then back along the River Parrett. About 3 miles in total and a nice afternoon walk.

One last thing, we went to find a pub to have a drink and meal in on Saturday night. There was a flyer for the Lamb and Lion in Hambridge (01460 281355) so we decided to drive out there. We were pleasantly surprised by the pub which was a great old fashioned country pub with a wood burning stove and a warm welcome. Our hosts Sam and Clair had only been there 4 weeks and we received a great welcome. We enjoyed a great meal that night in the warm and enjoyed so much returned for Sunday lunch the next day. Food and service were excellent.

    Some pictures of the site....
