I cant speak about the Coleman directly but as I mentioned in another thread I recently dug out my old Tilley Stormlamp which has remained unchanged since 1964 so they must be doing something right.

In use its a bit of a faff and time consuming to light so not suitable for a quick trip to the loo but once lit it will run all night on a few pence worth of paraffin so is extremely economical in use. Its extremely bright in use but is too heavy to hang from the ridge of all but the strongest tents and even then I would be concerned about the heat it generated.

There is the novelty factor for the kids as it has a meths preheater that I assume the coleman unit has a way round but the principle will probably be the same and it takes a few minutes between lighting and usable light being emmitted with the odd risk of a fireball if you open the regulator up too soon.

All in all its a great lamp but I wouldn't rely on it as my only one. I did put it away 20 years ago for a reason

I went to the zoo recently. The only animal there was a small dog. It was a shihtzu

    Yeh I did see that.
The main bonus for me was the fact that it ran off petrol which I have for my small camping stove.
I don't really need one, but I'm really drawn to them. It would be interesting to see from someone that's got one what they think.

    Hi dave

I have this coleman light ..

    Its a 1 mantle , multifuel
I usually buy the coleman fuel and use that instead of unleaded, but I think it does the same job on petrol just maybe a bit smokier.

Its very bright compared to a electric lantern, but no use inside a closed tent, to many fumes.. I was using it for fishing trips at night, whilst I was camping and great to sit beside the BBQ or fire at night, so you can see when your sausages are ready..

There is a knack to lighting and should be done well away from anything flammable. My wife says , are you going to light the firebomb... once you have the knack of lighting its great .. EG. read instructions.. Something I rarely do..

You can never have enough toys for camping..

Good on you. I really like my Tilley now that I have taken it out of retirement and I reckon in the tipi it will be just perfect.

I need to get one of these hooks to hang it on. Unfortunately the ones in the other post won't fit the 32mm pole of the tentipi so I may end up making something.

In the words of Worzel Gummage "I reckon I best get my finest turnip head on" and see what I can come up with.
