    Default GPS needed

    Morning all,

I am new to this forum and I would really appreciate it if you help me. I love camping and every year I go to at least one longer trip throughout Europe in my van. Now I have been thinking of getting a brand new GPS and wanted to know what you think of the Garmin Nuvi 1300?
It costs around £100 and has some nice handy features but would like to hear if you had any experience with it at all or recommendations really.
    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. When you say you want a GPS do you mean one for the car or one for walking/hiking with? Looking at it I assume you mean a vehicle GPS.

Thanks. I am after one for a vehicle, but also might use it to hike and bike around. obviously with all the necessary goodies but not too pricey. I quite liked this Garmin. What do you think? Thanx

Looks OK to me. Should be fine for a bike but bear in mind it won't be waterproof. To be honest once you're away from roads and into the wild blue yonder vehicle sets are next to useless.

For walking I use a basic Garmin Etrex which will give you your position, but you still need to be able to read a map. I've got a fitted system in my car but for my m/cycle I'm still using a garmin 2610 which is quite old.

Lol, and what about if you can't read maps? I have to admit I'm rubbish at reading maps. I ordered a Garmin GPSMAP 62st a few weeks ago, and it works like a dream. I set of for the weekend in the highlands last week, with the intention of getting lost. Basically I wanted to test the thing out, to see how good it was. I have to say I don't think I'll ever get lost again with this gadget by my side. Its an absolute god send and would recommend it to anybody looking for a good handheld gps mapping system.

I wish you luck my friend. Take it from me learn to read a map, if you're in the wilds of Scotland and the GPS goes off you'll be glad you did. Failing that 999 and ask for mountain rescue

    Hi,
I've got a Garmin Zumo 550 on my motorbike, and I have managed to buy a map upgrade for it. It has thousands of european campsites in it's POI database. I'm sure you could buy this upgrade for most Garmin GPS units.

    hope this helps.

    Gargy.
