    Default Royce Thermal Carpets

    Hi all,

Ok I have been chatting with Dave and have also posted a reply to a thread recently, that some of you may have read, about sleeping bags and in doing so mentioned Royce thermal carpets.

Dave has since given me a prod to post a new thread so that I can explain a bit more about the Royce carpets to anyone interested, along with contact details for more information.

I started the Royce company earlier this year having spent most of my working life in the Camping and manufacturing industry. The aim is to create a company that manufactures high quality hand made British products for Camping funny enough. We are currently working on a small range of tents that we plan to launch early next year to compete with the likes of Cabanon for example but in a more modern yet unique form.

The company was started however with the development of the Royce thermal carpet and we are now at a point where we are ready to start production having tested the carpets and perfected the design. We are currently awaiting a review to be published in Camping Magazine by Clive Garrett the magazine Editor which we hope will paint a clearer picture of the benefits of these carpets especially when used within the sleeping areas.

A Royce carpet is made up of a number of different layers that when combined form a highly effective thermal barrier between the ground and the inner surface area of the tent. The materials used include Thinsulate insulation, thermal foilfoam and a waterproof non slip PVC backing. The face side of the carpet is finished in a close weave heavy weight cotton mix Black Watch tartan which is then Scotch Guarded and treated with a flame retardant. The carpets are all hand made to order and come in an over sized zip up bag with compression straps for ease of packing and are covered by a lifetime guarantee.

The type of carpets that can be purchased from the big name manufacturers can not be compared with a Royce carpet as they offer very little, if any, thermal protection. For example, in an independent test that was carried out recently one of our carpets was laid over a solid block of ice within an enclosed chamber with an ambient chamber temperature set at 15 degrees. Readings of the carpet surface area where then taken over an 8 hour period and the carpet maintained a surface temperature of 12 degrees throughout the test. They then carried out the same test with a carpet from one of the big name manufacturers and this carpet held only a few degrees for about 3 or 4 minutes before dropping to the minus temperature levels of the sub floor.

When using any sleeping bag, no matter what rating, your bodies core temperature will drop and this is effected dramatically by what you are sleeping on. If you use an inflatable bed of any type this will be magnified by the amount of air that is held within the bed which draws the cold from the floor below into the bed which in turn affects your body temperature. By using one of our carpets this effect is reduced considerably if not eliminated completely thus giving a warmer and far more comfortable nights sleep. The living areas can also benefit too, giving you a much warmer and softer finish to the tent floor, whilst also protecting the ground sheet from sharp objects and chair legs etc.

We can make a carpet for any tent once we have the dimensions and they take around 5 working days to turn around from point of order. The cost of these carpets will retail at £25.00 per sq mtr, however, if anyone from this forum is interested I am happy to offer them at £20.00 per sq mtr prior to them being reviewed in Camping Magazine and then subsequently available via mail order through the magazine.

If anyone would like further details simply send me a message on here with a contact email address and I will reply with contact details.

Many thanks for reading this and I look forward to talking with those interested soon.

    Regards to all

    Gary

Is there any pictures of the layers? It would be good to see what they look like, or if you do manage to send me one I'll take some pics and get them posted up.

Yes I think it's a fantastic idea for the smaller tents as well.
I could see this as a large market, as an extra layer if it packs down small enough would make a great difference for a lot of people.
Also thinking about when I was so cold in Wales in Sept on an air bed, fully clothed, all my biking gear on top! Brrrrrrrrrr. Cold thinking about it now.

    Default Royce Carpets

Hi Gary, I have tried to get in touch using your email address but as yet no response? I am trying to see how much a carpet would be for my outwell nevada 3? I have also emailed Clive to see if there would be ANY chance of taking part in the trial he is doing? Thought I would try you on this forum in the hope of contacting you here! I am really interested although I am not sure you're lined up for production yet? I have 4 camping trips palnned this year so far so could be a good advert for you?
Would be great to hear from you - thanks!

Hi GaryWhat sort of packed size roughly would a carpet 2m x 1m be.In the winter I normally use a foam roll mat under a cheapo self inflating air matress. This works well but the roll mats are bulky.

Not yet, but I am talking to Gary about reviewing a set.
He did mention though that he might not be fully launching until next year to combine with the start of the season.
