The bigger peg you can get in the ground the better. The problem is you don't always know what the ground conditions are going to be so it's a bit of a lottery. When in the car and space is less of a premium I take the v shaped alloy pegs that came with the tent, some rock pegs and the deltas. The plastic delta pegs are great but a little bulky but not much use in really rocky ground. In saying that there is a new rock anchor by Delta that addresses that problem.

When on the bike and space is at a premium and I use the little tent I use square section alloy pegs that seem to work really well. I've also just bought some alloy triangular section ones for my canopy and I'll see how they go this week. Both of these types of pegs pack down really well.
I went to the zoo recently. The only animal there was a small dog. It was a shihtzu

depends how big your tent is and the ground you are faced with, we mostly have larger tents and car camp - so weight is not an issue. If you are back packing then I would guess there are better choices than ours

first thing is to pitch the tent in the right place - usually bum to the wind and make use of any natural shelter like hedges and hollows. Dont go under trees as a falling branch will usually fall pointy end first. Your car can create a windbreak of sorts too

As to pegs, my standard kit are thick (8mm diam) rock pegs such as 'Granites' from Towsure and skinny T rock pegs for the tent walls (Towsure again). Rock pegs are good in almost any ground and last for ages (compared to the cheap wire things you get free with most tents). If the ground is a bit soft I have some 'Ripple V's' and Delta pegs. If it gets sandy ex army sand pegs come into their own, though never yet needed the 18" steel sand pegs I got a while back

What ever you go for dont rely purely on the supplied pegs (unless you bought one of the top of the line tents) as they are often soft, bendy wire one
