Default Cold weather alert level 3 – Take care of your family

Time News: The Met Office have yesterday announced level 3 weather warnings for extreme drops in temperature and the possibility of the heaviest snowfall this winter so far. We asked our health advisor for some useful tips, hoping to help you make through this hard weekend. Does is mean 2012 is coming?

What shall we do for facing such a cold extremely weather?

    1. Using plenty of light layers to help trap the heat in, this works better than one thick layer.
    2. Keep well hydrated and have regular hot drinks and at least one hot meal a day if possible.
    3. Keep as active as possible.
    4. Check on babies and children, the very old and those who are already vulnerable due to ill health. Babies are particularly vulnerable to cold and may look pink and healthy but will be very cold to touch. They are also likely to be very limp and refusing to feed.
    5. Be aware of hypothermia. Hypothermia is a dangerous condition and can be life threatening, if you suspect someone is suffering with severe hypothermia:
    a. Call 999
    b. Remove any wet clothing and replace with dry clothing if possible
    c. Cover with blankets
    d. Try to keep them warm.
    e. Note: Do NOT use hot water bottles, or other direct heat sources, as these divert blood away from heart & lungs.

Hope these tips could keep you and your family safe and healthy during the cold snap.
